GIF stores color as an indexed palette of at most 256 entries, a constraint baked into the format specification since 1987. When an image was originally created with thousands or millions of colors, GIF already discarded that information at authoring time, so converting GIF to PNG cannot recover color depth that was never there. What the conversion does accomplish is a structural upgrade of the image's transparency model. GIF marks exactly one palette index as transparent, giving each pixel a binary choice: fully opaque or fully invisible. PNG replaces that with a per-pixel alpha channel carrying 256 discrete opacity levels. For a logo or icon with anti-aliased edges rendered over a colored background, the difference is immediately visible: GIF produces a jagged fringe of fully-opaque pixels where the edge softens; PNG preserves the smooth gradient your graphics tool originally computed. Beyond transparency, PNG uses DEFLATE compression and is not bound to an 8-bit palette, so the converted file can be used without recompression artifacts in any downstream raster workflow. Why convert GIF to PNG

The most concrete reason to convert GIF to PNG is to fix broken transparency. GIF's single-index transparency model means anti-aliased edges that look fine on a white background show a visible halo on any other background color. PNG alpha compositing eliminates that halo entirely. A second reason is pipeline compatibility: some image processing APIs, CSS frameworks, and print workflows treat PNG as the canonical lossless raster format and handle its alpha channel natively. Converting also makes the file editable in tools like Photoshop or Affinity Photo without the round-trip color quantization that happens when you re-export from GIF.

Quality & Compatibility

Pixel data is preserved exactly. GIF uses LZW lossless compression and PNG uses DEFLATE lossless compression, so decompressing one and recompressing to the other changes no pixel values. The 256-color palette constraint remains in effect: if the original GIF had dithering artifacts or posterization from its indexed encoding, those are faithfully reproduced in the PNG, not corrected. Color depth increases from 8-bit indexed to 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA, but the extra bit depth holds no new information — the palette values are simply stored in a wider container. File size typically increases modestly for simple flat-color graphics that GIF's LZW handles well, and can decrease for images with complex gradients that DEFLATE encodes more efficiently. The sRGB color space assumption carries over implicitly. No ICC profile is embedded unless your toolchain adds one explicitly.

It depends on the codecs involved. If both GIF and PNG are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If PNG is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded GIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that GIF had already compressed away.

Often yes, especially when PNG is lossless. GIF tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than PNG's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.
