MTS is the AVCHD consortium’s native file extension for camcorder SD cards. When Sony and Panasonic launched AVCHD in 2006 as the high-definition successor to MiniDV, they specified that AVCHD camcorders would record video to SD/SDHC cards as .mts files inside a specific AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM folder structure. The container format is exactly M2TS — same 192-byte packets, same H.264 video + AC-3 or Dolby Digital audio — but the extension differs by distribution media: .mts on camera cards, .m2ts on Blu-ray discs.

AVCHD camcorders (Sony HDR-series, Panasonic HDC, Canon HF/VIXIA) dominated consumer HD video between 2006 and 2014, before smartphones made dedicated camcorders niche. Ripping footage from an AVCHD card gives you .mts files in a folder; every editor (iMovie, Premiere, Resolve, Final Cut) opens them natively and typically converts them to intermediate MOV/MP4 for editing.
