Quality & Compatibility

Lossless WebP (VP8L) converts to PNG with every pixel and the full alpha channel intact — visually and numerically identical. Lossy WebP (VP8) cannot be reversed: PNG faithfully copies the already-compressed pixels but cannot recover detail WebP discarded, so expect no quality gain, only a larger file. Both formats top out at 8 bits per channel in common use, so color depth is preserved. PNG keeps full transparency but does not carry WebP's animation, and most EXIF/ICC and XMP metadata is dropped unless the encoder explicitly migrates it. File size typically grows two to five times.
