Setup: PEF is Pentax's RAW camera format. Goal: an interchangeable PDF. Turning PEF into PDF bridges the pixel world and the page world. Pixel-perfect rendering from the PEF meets page-layout conventions of the PDF: margins, orientation, DPI. The composition happens in ImageMagick so the image is not re-sampled unless you explicitly ask for it. A quick refresher — PEF is Pentax's RAW camera format. By contrast, PDF is Adobe's Portable Document Format, the fixed-layout standard for shareable documents.
Pentax RAW
Source formatPEF is the RAW image format used by Pentax DSLR cameras, containing full sensor data.
PDF Document
Target formatPDF is the universal standard for sharing documents with consistent formatting across all devices and operating systems. It preserves fonts, images, and layout exactly as intended by the author.
Why convert PEF to PDF
A PDF carries metadata (author, date, title) that images lack. Document management systems index on those fields; sending a bare PEF means losing all that context by the time the file lands in search.
HOW TO CONVERT
PEF → PDF
Provide the PEF
Drag-and-drop an image up to 100 MB on the free tier. PNG, JPG, HEIC and WebP sources all work.
Wrap into PDF
We emit a PDF document with the image placed on a page, optional filename caption and preserved resolution.
Retrieve the output
Click to download; the PDF opens in any reader, prints consistently and can be signed digitally.
Common Use Cases
Medical record distribution
Clinicians send PDF-wrapped imaging PEF in patient records rather than raw image files.
Insurance claim uploads
Insurers accept PDF documentation of damage; your PEF photos get rejected or silently cropped.
Real estate listings
Agencies compile PDF brochures by page-boxing PEF property photos — one image per page.
Academic paper figures
Supplementary figures submitted as PDF alongside the main paper, each wrapping an original PEF.
PEF vs PDF — Strengths and limitations
What each format does best, and where it falls short.
PEF Strengths
- Full Pentax sensor data with 14-bit or 12-bit depth.
- Rich Pentax makernotes for lens and filter metadata.
- DNG alternative available on body — user choice of archival openness.
- Every major raw processor supports PEF.
Limitations
- Proprietary with no public spec.
- Niche market share — Pentax DSLR sales are a fraction of Canon/Nikon/Sony.
- Lightroom profile coverage trails the Big Three.
PDF Strengths
- Pixel-perfect fidelity across operating systems, browsers, and printers.
- Embeds fonts, so documents render identically without the reader having them installed.
- Supports digital signatures, encryption, and redaction for legal workflows.
- ISO-standardized (ISO 32000) with multiple validated subsets (PDF/A, PDF/X, PDF/UA).
- Supports both vector and raster content, keeping line art crisp at any zoom level.
Limitations
- Editing is difficult — the format is optimized for display, not mutation.
- Text extraction can scramble reading order in multi-column layouts.
- File sizes balloon quickly when embedding high-resolution images or fonts.

PEF vs PDF — Typical file sizes
Approximate file sizes for common scenarios.
PEF
- 24 MP PEF (K-3 Mark III) 30-40 MB
- 36 MP PEF (K-1 Mark II) 45-60 MB
- 1-page text-only memo 50–150 KB
- 10-page report with images 500 KB – 2 MB
- Scanned document (per page) 100 KB – 1 MB
- Full-color magazine (48 pages) 10–40 MB
Quality & Compatibility
DPI metadata from the PEF is used to compute the image's on-page size in the PDF. A 300-DPI photo of a 4x6 receipt lands as a 4x6-inch image on the page; override with "fit to page" in Advanced if you want it to fill the page instead.
Tips for Best Results
- Multi-page PDF beats zipping many single-page PDFs for email attachment and most portal uploads.
- Set page size (A4 / Letter / custom) in Advanced to match the destination printer's default, avoiding margin surprises.
- For high-resolution scans, output a larger PDF rather than downscaling — the document management system can render at any zoom.
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The free tier accepts files up to 100 MB without registration, email capture or watermarks. Paid plans raise the size cap, enable batch conversions and provide a REST API for automation, but nothing on the free tier is quality-limited — the output is exactly the same as on any paid plan.
Minimally. When the image encoding carries directly into the PDF (JPEG into PDF for example), pixels are stream-copied and quality is bit-exact. When re-encoding is required, we use high-quality defaults that are visually indistinguishable from the source on typical viewing conditions.
Uploads run over HTTPS, files are processed in isolated containers, and both the source PEF and the PDF output are auto-deleted within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and KaijuConverter does not use uploads for AI training. The paid plan adds a signable data-processing agreement for regulated workflows.
Yes. Upload multiple images (or a ZIP) and the pipeline produces a multi-page PDF with one image per page, ordered by filename. Advanced options control page size, orientation per page and whether captions are inserted.
Most files finish in well under a minute. Small images and documents are typically ready in a few seconds; large video or audio files scale roughly with duration. Upload speed from your network is usually the dominant factor, not server time.
A4 portrait by default — the global mainstream. Switch to Letter or any custom dimensions in Advanced. You can also select "match image" so the PDF page size tracks the PEF aspect ratio exactly, eliminating white margins for custom printing.
