FLV — Flash Video — was Macromedia’s container for streaming video inside the Flash Player browser plugin. It launched with Flash Player 6 in 2002. The format’s killer app was YouTube: from 2005 to 2015, effectively every video on YouTube was served as FLV. Facebook, Hulu, and most early streaming sites followed suit. At its peak, Flash Video ran about 75% of all internet video.

Apple’s 2010 refusal to support Flash on iPhone (Steve Jobs’ famous "Thoughts on Flash" letter), combined with HTML5 <video>, slowly starved the ecosystem. Adobe officially killed Flash Player in December 2020. FLV files still exist in archives of that decade and in a few legacy streaming systems, but no new content is produced as FLV.

  • Hardware video decoders never added FLV support.
  • Metadata format is primitive compared to MP4 or MKV.
  • Actively harmful to use today — every major security agency has warned against Flash since 2015.

Browser support varies: modern Chromium, Firefox and Safari play common containers via the HTML5 <video> tag, but niche FLV variants may fail.
