About JXL Files

JPEG XL Image

Released 2021 By JPEG Committee (Cloudinary + Google)

JPEG XL is a next-generation image codec designed to replace JPEG with better compression, lossless transcoding from existing JPEGs, and progressive decoding. Browser support is still emerging.

The story

HOW JXL
CAME TO BE.

1992
2017
2021
2022
2023
2026

JPEG XL is the JPEG committee’s attempt to build a successor worthy of replacing its own 1992 creation. Work started in 2017 when the committee (Joint Photographic Experts Group, the original) put out a call for proposals. Two candidates merged: Cloudinary’s FUIF (free universal image format) and Google’s PIK. The unified spec, JPEG XL, became an international standard in 2021 (ISO/IEC 18181).

JPEG XL has a rare superpower: it can losslessly re-encode an existing JPEG, shrinking it 20% with zero quality loss, and the original JPEG can be exactly restored. That would let the entire web shrink overnight without any visible change. Despite that, 2022-2023 was turbulent: Google announced Chrome JPEG XL support, then removed it citing low ecosystem interest. Apple added it to Safari 17 in 2023. As of 2026 it’s supported in Safari and via flags in Firefox; Chrome still officially declines.

CURIOSITIES &
TRIVIA.

01

JPEG XL can losslessly re-encode any existing JPEG, making it ~20% smaller — and can reverse the process bit-for-bit.

02

It is the first image format designed from the start to handle both photographic and screenshot/synthetic content equally well.

03

Supports HDR, wide gamut, 32-bit float pixels, alpha transparency, and animation — a true superset of GIF/PNG/JPEG.

04

Google Chrome implemented JPEG XL, then removed it in 2022 citing "insufficient ecosystem interest" — a controversial call that kept the format niche.

05

Film archives and libraries favor JPEG XL's lossless mode for digitization because it beats TIFF+LZW in compression by 15-30%.

STRENGTHS &
LIMITATIONS.

Strengths

 • Lossless JPEG re-encoding — migrate billions of JPEGs without any quality loss.
 • Best-in-class lossless compression — typically beats PNG by 30-50%.
 • Single format for web, print, HDR, and archival workflows.
 • Progressive decoding with fine-grained previews.
 • Patent-free and royalty-free.

Limitations

 • Chrome removed support in 2022; desktop ecosystem adoption stalled.
 • Editor/tool support lags behind AVIF and HEIC.
 • Encoding is CPU-heavy, particularly for high-quality settings.
 • Two-camera market (AVIF vs JPEG XL) confuses publishers choosing a modern format.

Frequently Asked Questions about JXL

Frequently Asked Questions

JXL (JPEG XL Image) is an image format used to store raster graphics — a two-dimensional grid of pixels describing a picture. It is part of the raster & vector images family and designed around a specific trade-off between file size, visual fidelity, and feature support (transparency, colour depth, compression type). Photographers, web designers, and content creators choose JXL when its particular strengths match the publishing target.

Most desktop photo viewers (Windows Photos, macOS Preview, GIMP, Photoshop, Affinity Photo) open JXL natively. On mobile, iOS Photos and Google Photos display JXL in the gallery when supported by the OS. If the format is rare or new, convert to JPG or PNG first — both are universally readable — using our JXL to JPG or JXL to PNG converter.

Upload the JXL to KaijuConverter and pick a target format (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF, BMP, SVG, PDF). The conversion runs in the browser via ImageMagick and returns a download in seconds. No account or installation required; both input and output delete automatically within two hours.

It depends on the task. JPG is the smallest file size for photographs; PNG is lossless with transparency; JXL has its own niche that may favour colour depth, animation, or encoding efficiency over one or both of those. For the final web publish, test all three and measure file size plus visible quality on real content.
