WavPack — .wv — was created by David Bryant starting in 1998 as a hybrid lossless/lossy audio codec, with stable public releases from 2002 onward. Bryant’s big idea was hybrid mode: a .wv file can carry a lossy "correction" stream alongside the main data, so the same file decodes either as high-quality lossy (for iPod sync) or as full lossless (for archival). That dual behavior made WavPack popular with archivists who wanted one file to serve both use cases.

WavPack compression is competitive with FLAC (usually within 2-3%) and includes support for 32-bit float, multichannel surround, and DSD (Direct Stream Digital) via .wv containers. The community is small but dedicated; Plex, foobar2000, and VLC all handle .wv natively, and Bryant has maintained the reference implementation continuously for 25+ years.
