Frequently Asked Questions

CBZ is a ZIP archive renamed with the .cbz extension; CBR is a RAR archive renamed .cbr. Both contain sequentially numbered image files (one per comic page). CBZ is strongly preferred because ZIP is an open format, freely creatable with any tool. CBR requires proprietary RAR tools to create. Most modern digital comics are distributed as CBZ; CBR is a legacy format from the early days of digital comics.

<strong>7z</strong> (LZMA2) typically beats both ZIP and RAR by 10–30% for text-heavy content, but is slower to create. <strong>RAR</strong> compresses slightly better than ZIP and supports recovery records (good for damaged archives) but the format is proprietary. <strong>ZIP</strong> is the universal lingua franca — every OS opens it natively. Use 7z for long-term storage, ZIP for sharing.

Place your comic page images in a folder, named sequentially with leading zeros (001.jpg, 002.jpg, etc.). Then create a ZIP archive of that folder and rename the .zip to .cbz. On Windows: right-click the folder → Send to → Compressed folder → rename extension. On Linux/macOS: zip -r comic.cbz comic_folder/. Optionally add a ComicInfo.xml file in the root for metadata.

Yes, when the file contains anything sensitive. Standard ZIP "encryption" (ZipCrypto) is broken and trivially crackable. Use AES-256 (ZIP 2.0+, supported by 7-Zip, WinRAR, modern Windows). Verify the encryption type when creating: many tools default to ZipCrypto for compatibility. Better still, use 7z which uses AES-256 by default.

ComicInfo.xml is a metadata schema placed in the root of a CBZ archive. It contains structured information: title, series name, issue number, year, author, publisher, page count, language, genre, and summary. Comic library managers like Komga, Kavita, and YACReader read this file to display rich information and enable searching and filtering. It was developed by Comixology and is now the community de facto standard.

Original ZIP: 4 GB total + 65,535 files. ZIP64 (transparent extension): up to 16 EB and unlimited files. Modern tools (Windows Explorer, macOS Finder, 7-Zip, Linux unzip) all support ZIP64 automatically when needed. The only catch: very old tools (pre-2007) cannot open ZIP64 archives.

Native Kindle firmware does not support CBZ. However, Kindle devices support MOBI and AZW3, so you can convert CBZ to a comic-optimised Kindle format using Calibre (free): open Calibre, add the CBZ file, right-click → Convert → output format MOBI or AZW3, and transfer to Kindle via USB or email. Calibre handles the page image extraction and e-book formatting automatically.

Some content does not compress well: already-compressed media (JPG, MP4, MP3), encrypted files, random binary data. Compression algorithms exploit redundancy — these formats already removed it. To shrink them you would need lossy re-encoding, not archiving. Save archives for text, source code, uncompressed media (BMP, WAV, RAW), and document files.
