Frequently Asked Questions

DWG is AutoCAD's native binary format — compact, fast to load, supports all AutoCAD features, but proprietary (Autodesk controls the spec). DXF is the open, ASCII-text interchange format Autodesk publishes for interoperability — human-readable, widely supported by non-AutoCAD software, slightly larger files. For sharing with other CAD software, laser cutters, CNC machines, or non-Autodesk tools, use DXF. For working within AutoCAD or between AutoCAD seats, DWG is faster and more feature-complete.

On KaijuConverter every file is processed inside an isolated container, encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest, and automatically deleted after 60 minutes with multi-pass overwrite. We never train on, share, or analyze user content. For maximum privacy on extremely sensitive material, prefer offline tools (ImageMagick, FFmpeg, LibreOffice) that you control end-to-end.

Export as DXF R12 (AC1009) for maximum compatibility with laser cutters, vinyl cutters, CNC CAM software, and older applications. R12 lacks some features (NURBS splines, hatches are simplified, no LWPOLYLINE), but virtually every piece of software that reads DXF supports it. For richer drawings with NURBS, hatches, and complex entities, use R2010 (AC1024) — it's widely supported by modern applications while being stable. Avoid the newest formats (R2018+) unless specifically required, as some tools lag behind.

For 95% of use cases, yes — server-side ImageMagick, FFmpeg and LibreOffice produce identical output to the same tools on your laptop. Desktop software wins for: extremely large files (multi-GB), batch jobs of thousands of files, scripted pipelines, or content too sensitive to upload. KaijuConverter caps at 25 MB per file on the free tier (up to 2 GB on paid plans).

This is a units mismatch. DXF files store coordinates as raw numbers — the meaning (inches vs mm) is in the $INSUNITS header variable (code 0=unitless, 1=inches, 4=mm). If the sender drew in inches but your application assumes mm (or vice versa), all coordinates are off by 25.4. Check $INSUNITS in the DXF HEADER section with a text editor or ezdxf: `doc.header["$INSUNITS"]`. Set your importer to match the source units, or scale the drawing by 25.4 or 1/25.4 after import.

Most format conversions are lossy by design — JPG, MP3, MP4, WebP all discard perceptual data to save bytes. Going through a lossy intermediate compounds the loss. To minimize visible/audible drift: convert from the original master, choose a higher quality setting, and avoid converting back and forth between lossy formats.

Laser cutters need clean, closed path outlines. Best practices: (1) use LWPOLYLINE entities with `closed=True` for all cut paths; (2) put cut paths on a single dedicated layer (e.g., "CUT"); (3) remove all construction lines, dimensions, text, and fills from the cut layer; (4) set scale 1:1 with correct units ($INSUNITS=4 for mm); (5) export as DXF R12 for broadest machine support. In Python with ezdxf: query for LWPOLYLINE entities, filter by `is_closed`, copy to a new document, and save as R12.

Yes — KaijuConverter accepts multiple files in a single drop and returns a ZIP. For very large batches (thousands of files) consider command-line tools or our API: <code>find . -name "*.heic" -exec magick {} {.}.jpg \;</code> or similar one-liners scale to millions of files when run locally.
