Frequently Asked Questions

GeoTIFF embeds three pieces of geospatial information in TIFF private tags: (1) an affine transformation (ModelTiepointTag + ModelPixelScaleTag) that converts pixel (row, column) coordinates to geographic (X, Y) coordinates using the formula: Geographic_X = TiePoint_X + Col × PixelScale_X; (2) a GeoKeyDirectory defining the coordinate reference system — whether the coordinates are geographic (latitude/longitude) or projected (UTM, LCC, etc.) and which ellipsoid and datum are used; and (3) optionally a WKT CRS string for full precision. Tools like rasterio and QGIS read these tags automatically to position the image correctly on a map.

On KaijuConverter every file is processed inside an isolated container, encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest, and automatically deleted after 60 minutes with multi-pass overwrite. We never train on, share, or analyze user content. For maximum privacy on extremely sensitive material, prefer offline tools (ImageMagick, FFmpeg, LibreOffice) that you control end-to-end.

A Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) reorganizes the internal layout of a GeoTIFF file so it can be efficiently accessed over HTTP using byte-range requests. Standard GeoTIFF requires downloading the entire file to read a small area; a COG stores data in spatial tiles (typically 512×512 pixels) with pre-computed overview pyramids at lower resolutions. A client can request only the tiles and zoom level needed for the current viewport — for a world-scale web map, this might mean downloading 1 KB of overview data instead of 10 GB of full resolution. COG has become the standard for satellite imagery distribution on S3, GCS, and Azure Blob Storage.

For 95% of use cases, yes — server-side ImageMagick, FFmpeg and LibreOffice produce identical output to the same tools on your laptop. Desktop software wins for: extremely large files (multi-GB), batch jobs of thousands of files, scripted pipelines, or content too sensitive to upload. KaijuConverter caps at 25 MB per file on the free tier (up to 2 GB on paid plans).

Both DEMs and DSMs are GeoTIFF rasters where pixel values are elevations in meters, but they represent different surface definitions. A DTM (Digital Terrain Model) or DEM (Digital Elevation Model) represents bare earth — vegetation, buildings, and above-ground structures are removed. A DSM (Digital Surface Model) represents the first surface encountered by the sensor — the tops of trees, buildings, and all objects. The difference is computed by subtracting DTM from DSM to get a Canopy Height Model (CHM) or nDSM (normalized DSM) representing object heights above ground. LiDAR is the primary source for DTM data (classified ground points), while photogrammetric stereo and radar produce DSMs.

Most format conversions are lossy by design — JPG, MP3, MP4, WebP all discard perceptual data to save bytes. Going through a lossy intermediate compounds the loss. To minimize visible/audible drift: convert from the original master, choose a higher quality setting, and avoid converting back and forth between lossy formats.

Use rasterio's reproject function, which wraps GDAL's warping capabilities. You specify the source CRS (read from the file), the target CRS (e.g., EPSG:4326 for WGS84, EPSG:32630 for UTM 30N), and the resampling method (bilinear for continuous data like elevation, nearest neighbor for categorical data like land cover). rasterio's calculate_default_transform function computes the correct output dimensions and transform for the new CRS. From the command line, gdal_warp -t_srs EPSG:4326 input.tif output.tif is the quickest path. Always validate the output by checking the coordinates and that the image appears in the correct location in QGIS or a similar GIS.

Yes — KaijuConverter accepts multiple files in a single drop and returns a ZIP. For very large batches (thousands of files) consider command-line tools or our API: <code>find . -name "*.heic" -exec magick {} {.}.jpg \;</code> or similar one-liners scale to millions of files when run locally.
