Frequently Asked Questions

OBJ stores the 3D geometry — vertices, faces, normals, and UV texture coordinates. MTL (Material Template Library) is a companion file that defines material properties like color, shininess, opacity, and texture maps. When you load an OBJ file, the application also reads the MTL file referenced in it to apply materials. Both files plus any referenced texture images must be kept together; moving them separately breaks the material links.

On KaijuConverter every file is processed inside an isolated container, encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest, and automatically deleted after 60 minutes with multi-pass overwrite. We never train on, share, or analyze user content. For maximum privacy on extremely sensitive material, prefer offline tools (ImageMagick, FFmpeg, LibreOffice) that you control end-to-end.

No. OBJ is a static geometry format and has no support for animation, skeletal rigs, morph targets, or keyframes. For animated 3D content, you need formats like FBX, glTF/GLB, COLLADA, or USD. If you have an animated model you want to share, export it as FBX (for game engines or Maya) or glTF (for web and modern pipelines).

For 95% of use cases, yes — server-side ImageMagick, FFmpeg and LibreOffice produce identical output to the same tools on your laptop. Desktop software wins for: extremely large files (multi-GB), batch jobs of thousands of files, scripted pipelines, or content too sensitive to upload. KaijuConverter caps at 25 MB per file on the free tier (up to 2 GB on paid plans).

This typically happens because the MTL file or texture images are missing or the paths are broken. OBJ references textures by relative file path. If you moved the OBJ without moving the accompanying MTL and texture files into the same folder, the application cannot find them. Make sure all three (OBJ + MTL + textures) are in the same directory and reimport. In Blender, you can reassign textures manually in the Shader Editor.

Most format conversions are lossy by design — JPG, MP3, MP4, WebP all discard perceptual data to save bytes. Going through a lossy intermediate compounds the loss. To minimize visible/audible drift: convert from the original master, choose a higher quality setting, and avoid converting back and forth between lossy formats.

glTF (and especially GLB — the binary, single-file version) is far better for web 3D. GLB embeds geometry, materials, and textures in one compact binary file, typically 2–5× smaller than an equivalent OBJ+MTL+textures package. glTF also natively supports PBR (physically-based rendering) materials and animations. Three.js, Babylon.js, model-viewer, and all major WebGL frameworks have first-class glTF support. OBJ is acceptable for simple static models but should be converted to GLB for production web use.

Yes — KaijuConverter accepts multiple files in a single drop and returns a ZIP. For very large batches (thousands of files) consider command-line tools or our API: <code>find . -name "*.heic" -exec magick {} {.}.jpg \;</code> or similar one-liners scale to millions of files when run locally.
