The result is a file that streams efficiently over a 2G or 3G connection but frustrates on a Windows PC: Windows Media Player dropped native 3GP support years ago, most NLEs either reject the container or import it with frame-dropping artifacts, and the AMR audio track is essentially invisible to anything outside a mobile ecosystem. AVI is a 1992 Microsoft container that has outlasted every prediction of its death. The RIFF-based structure is understood by every version of Windows natively, by VirtualDub, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and virtually every DVD-authoring tool. Why convert 3GP to AVI

The practical driver is almost always desktop editing or archival playback. AMR audio, the default voice codec in 3GP files, is a speech-codec that samples at 8 kHz narrowband and sounds acceptably intelligible on a phone earpiece but becomes noticeably thin through speakers or headphones. Remuxing to AVI forces a transcode to PCM or MP3, which restores the full frequency representation that AMR discarded. Additionally, 3GP files produced by older Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson handsets embed H.263 video, a codec that hardware decoders on modern GPUs no longer accelerate, causing stutter on playback. AVI carrying H.264 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video uses paths that graphics drivers still support.

Quality & Compatibility

3GP video encoded with H.263 is lossy and already degraded before conversion begins; re-encoding to MPEG-4 Part 2 inside AVI adds a second generation of DCT loss, most visible as blocking in flat areas and ringing around high-contrast edges. If the source 3GP uses H.264, the converter can copy the video stream without re-encoding (a remux), preserving every bit of the original quality, though AVI's lack of a standardized H.264 signaling field means some players fall back to software decoding. AMR audio is always transcoded since AVI does not support the AMR codec; PCM output is lossless from the decoded AMR signal but the frequency content AMR discarded at encoding time is gone permanently. AVI has no native support for B-frames in its index structure, so H.264 streams with B-frames may require container-level workarounds that some encoders handle silently. Metadata such as GPS coordinates, device model, and capture timestamp embedded in the 3GP moov atom is not preserved in AVI, which has no equivalent metadata block.

If the codecs inside 3GP (usually H.264 or H.265 for video, AAC for audio) are accepted by AVI, we stream-copy — the bytes are repackaged into the new container with zero re-encoding and no quality loss. When the source uses a codec the target does not support, we transcode at a matching bitrate to keep the visual quality close to the original.

With stream copy, expect the job to finish in seconds to tens of seconds regardless of video length — the work is mostly rewriting the container. Transcoding is slower (roughly real-time: a ten-minute clip takes about ten minutes) because every frame must be decoded and re-encoded. The progress bar shows which mode applies.

Yes. Resolution, frame rate, colour space and bit depth are preserved by default; stream copy is literally bit-identical on these parameters. If you explicitly pick a lower bitrate or a different codec in Advanced, the output is rebuilt to those settings, but the default is always "match the source".
