3GP was built for third-generation mobile networks — the clue is in the name. The format emerged from the 3GPP consortium around 2002 to solve a specific problem: shipping video over narrow-band cellular connections where bandwidth was measured in tens of kilobits per second. To hit those targets, 3GP pairs H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video with AMR-NB or AAC audio inside an MPEG-4 Part 12 container. The codec choices were deliberate and aggressive: AMR-NB operates at 4.75–12.2 kbps and is optimized for voice, not music or ambient sound. H.263 tops out well below HD. The result is a container that is technically an ISO Base Media File Format derivative — meaning it shares DNA with MP4 — but imposes strict codec and resolution constraints that most modern software either refuses outright or silently mishandles. A 3GP file shot on a Nokia or early-generation Android in 2007–2012 will not play in most 2024 video editors, media servers, or social platforms. Converting to MP4 replaces the constrained codec envelope with H.264 or H.265 video and AAC or MP3 audio inside a fully standard MPEG-4 Part 14 container, which is accepted natively on every major OS, browser, and platform without plugins or workarounds.

Why convert 3GP to MP4

Most video editors, streaming platforms, and social networks reject 3GP outright or accept it inconsistently. Windows Media Player on Windows 10 and 11 often fails to render 3GP, and iMovie, DaVinci Resolve, and Premiere Pro treat it as an unknown format without additional codec packs. YouTube and Instagram accept MP4 as a primary ingest format and have historically dropped or re-encoded 3GP with poor results. Beyond compatibility, 3GP files encoded with H.263 lack the entropy coding efficiency of H.264, so the same visual quality at modern resolutions costs more bitrate in 3GP than in MP4-H.264. If the original was recorded at a low bitrate — 64–256 kbps is typical for 3GP clips from feature phones — the conversion cannot recover lost detail, but it does unlock the file for editing, archival, and distribution workflows that the original container simply cannot enter.

Quality & Compatibility

3GP to MP4 is a transcode, not a lossless rewrap, unless the source video track already uses MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.264 and the audio uses AAC, in which case stream-copy is possible and introduces zero generation loss. In the common case where the video is H.263 and the audio is AMR-NB, both streams must be decoded and re-encoded: H.263 becomes H.264 and AMR-NB becomes AAC. This re-encode discards the AMR-NB voice codec characteristics, which is generally an improvement for non-voice content but means voice recordings may sound subtly different in timbre. Bit depth stays at 8-bit per channel; 3GP never carried high bit-depth content. No alpha channel exists in either format at the video level. Embedded metadata such as GPS coordinates and device timestamps stored in 3GP udta or moov atoms may or may not survive depending on the transcoder; GPS data is common in older Android 3GP clips and is often silently dropped.

Only when it has to. If the codecs inside 3GP (usually H.264 or H.265 for video, AAC for audio) are accepted by MP4, we stream-copy — the bytes are repackaged into the new container with zero re-encoding and no quality loss. When the source uses a codec the target does not support, we transcode at a matching bitrate to keep the visual quality close to the original.

With stream copy, expect the job to finish in seconds to tens of seconds regardless of video length — the work is mostly rewriting the container. Transcoding is slower (roughly real-time: a ten-minute clip takes about ten minutes) because every frame must be decoded and re-encoded. The progress bar shows which mode applies.

Yes. Resolution, frame rate, colour space and bit depth are preserved by default; stream copy is literally bit-identical on these parameters. If you explicitly pick a lower bitrate or a different codec in Advanced, the output is rebuilt to those settings, but the default is always "match the source".
