Quality & Compatibility
The critical technical reality of this conversion is that AMR-NB audio, the most common codec inside 3GP files, was designed for speech intelligibility at 4.75 to 12.2 kbps over narrow radio channels, sampled at 8 kHz. The Nyquist limit at 8 kHz means no frequency above 4 kHz is captured at all. MP3 can encode up to 20 kHz, but re-encoding an 8 kHz source into MP3 does not recover those absent high frequencies; the ceiling stays at 4 kHz regardless of the MP3 bitrate chosen. What MP3 does provide is a container that every player understands, and at 128 kbps it stores the available speech-range audio without additional quality loss. AAC-LC inside 3GP typically uses 8 to 16 kHz sampling, so the same ceiling applies. There is no alpha channel or color space to consider for audio-only output. ID3 tags are written fresh and will not carry over automatically from the 3GP container.
Tips for Best Results
- Choose 128 kbps MP3 for voice recordings from 3GP — higher bitrates like 320 kbps will not improve clarity because the AMR-NB source was sampled at 8 kHz, capping recoverable audio at 4 kHz regardless of output bitrate.
- If the 3GP file came from a modern Android device after 2015, the audio track may be AAC-LC at 44.1 kHz rather than AMR-NB; in that case 192 kbps or 256 kbps MP3 is worth using, as the source actually contains full-range audio.
- If you plan to edit the extracted audio in a DAW or podcast editor afterward, consider converting to WAV instead of MP3 to avoid generation loss from chained lossy encoding — MP3 is the right choice only when the final destination is playback or distribution.
