The video, subtitles, chapter markers, and one or more audio streams all coexist inside the Matroska wrapper, and the audio track itself is almost certainly already encoded in a compressed format — most often AAC, AC-3 (Dolby Digital), DTS, or Opus. When you convert MKV to MP3 you are not touching the video at all; you are extracting that audio stream and re-encoding it into MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, a psychoacoustic lossy codec standardized in 1993 that compresses audio by discarding frequencies the human auditory system is least sensitive to. Quality & Compatibility
This is a lossy-to-lossy transcode, which means generation loss is real. If the MKV's audio track is AC-3 at 640 kbps or DTS at 1509 kbps and you encode to MP3 at 128 kbps, you lose roughly 80 percent of the bitrate budget, and the psychoacoustic models of two different codecs apply sequentially — artifacts can compound. Encoding at 320 kbps MP3 minimizes but does not eliminate this. MP3 is strictly stereo or mono; if the source is 5.1 surround, the conversion will downmix all six channels into two, collapsing the surround field. MP3 does not carry metadata beyond ID3 tags (title, artist, album, track number, cover art via APIC frame) — Matroska's rich chapter structure, multiple subtitle tracks, and per-track language tags are all discarded. Bit depth is fixed at 16-bit for MP3 regardless of whether the source was 24-bit FLAC or TrueHD inside the MKV. Sample rates above 48 kHz are not supported by the MP3 specification, so high-resolution audio at 96 kHz or 192 kHz will be downsampled. There is no alpha channel concept in audio, so that dimension is not applicable here.
Tips for Best Results
- Choose 192 kbps or 320 kbps if the source track is a high-bitrate codec like DTS or AC-3 — encoding below 128 kbps on a doubly-lossy transcode produces audible pre-echo and ringing on transient sounds like cymbals.
- If your MKV contains multiple audio tracks (common in multilingual releases), verify which track the converter selects by default; some files list the commentary or secondary language track first, not the main feature audio.
- For archival purposes, consider whether you actually need MP3: if your target device supports AAC or Opus, those codecs achieve equivalent perceived quality at 30 to 40 percent lower bitrate than MP3 at the same setting, because MP3's Huffman coding and psychoacoustic model are older designs.
