HOW TO CONVERT AIFF → MP3
Upload the AIFF
Drop or select your AIFF file. The upload is encrypted and the file is queued for conversion.
Transcode via FFmpeg
FFmpeg decodes the AIFF stream to PCM internally, then re-encodes as MP3 at the bitrate you select.
Download the MP3
The MP3 is delivered as a direct download; metadata and cover art transfer automatically where possible.
AIFF is Apple's uncompressed Audio Interchange File Format, the macOS equivalent of WAV. That is why users land on this page looking for a MP3 copy. Need a MP3 version of a AIFF recording for a podcast host, audio book platform or DAW that refuses the original container? Drop the file above and our encoder produces a clean MP3 you can drag straight into the destination tool. Metadata such as title, artist and cover art travels with the audio. Context: AIFF is Apple's uncompressed Audio Interchange File Format, the macOS equivalent of WAV. MP3 is the universal lossy audio format with decades of hardware support.
Why convert AIFF to MP3
AIFF Audio is great in its own niche, but MP3 Audio is either more universally playable or better suited to the device you are targeting. Converting lets you ship the audio without asking listeners to install a codec. The loss in quality between the two is negligible at sensible bitrates.

AIFF vs MP3 — Strengths and limitations
What each format does best, and where it falls short.
AIFF Strengths
- Lossless and uncompressed — bit-exact audio reproduction.
- Native to macOS and all Apple Pro Audio apps.
- Simple structure — trivially parsed by audio libraries.
- Supports up to 32-bit float, 192 kHz, and multi-channel audio.
- Rich metadata via named chunks (annotations, markers, MIDI).
Limitations
- Enormous file sizes — 10 MB per minute at CD quality.
- No built-in compression — use FLAC for lossless with smaller files.
- Big-endian byte order confuses tools written on little-endian hardware.
MP3 Strengths
- Universal support — every device, every player, every car stereo.
- Small file sizes with acceptable quality at 128–320 kbps.
- Completely royalty-free since April 2017.
- ID3 metadata tags support artist, album, cover art, lyrics, and more.
- Efficient decoding — runs on the most basic hardware.
Limitations
- Lossy — re-encoding compounds quality loss.
- Outperformed by AAC, Opus, and OGG at equivalent bitrates.
- Pre-echo artifacts on sharp percussive sounds.
Quality & Compatibility
Lossy-to-lossy transcoding (most cross-format audio jobs) loses a tiny amount of quality on each pass — usually inaudible at our default VBR ~190 kbps for music or 96 kbps for speech. Lossy-to-lossless conversions freeze the existing quality but cannot improve it; lossless-to-lossy is only as good as the target bitrate you choose.
Tips for Best Results
- Pick 128 kbps for podcasts and voice, 192–256 kbps for music, 320 kbps only if the audio will be edited further downstream.
- Keep the AIFF master alongside the MP3 — re-encoding a lossy format twice accumulates audible artefacts.
- For mono voice content, convert to mono MP3 explicitly to halve file size without any quality loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
Lossy-to-lossy conversions (most combinations) re-compress the audio, which technically introduces some loss. At a 192 kbps or higher target it is inaudible on normal equipment. Lossy-to-lossless conversions freeze the existing quality but cannot improve it; lossless-to-lossy transcodes are only as good as the target bitrate you choose.
For voice content (podcasts, audiobooks, lectures) 128 kbps is indistinguishable from higher bitrates. For music, 192-256 kbps covers most listening; 320 kbps is the ceiling for MP3 and the right choice for audio you plan to edit further. Above that, prefer a lossless target instead.
Yes. Title, artist, album, year and cover art travel from the AIFF container to the MP3 container automatically where both formats support them. If a tag field has no MP3 equivalent, it is dropped silently. Use any tag editor (Mp3tag, MusicBrainz Picard) to fine-tune afterwards.
AIFF Audio
Source formatAIFF is Apple's uncompressed audio format, equivalent to WAV in the macOS ecosystem. It stores CD-quality PCM audio and is widely used in professional audio production on Apple hardware.
MP3 Audio
Target formatMP3 is the most widely recognized audio format in the world. It uses lossy compression to dramatically reduce file sizes while maintaining good perceived audio quality, making it the standard for music distribution.

Common Use Cases
Share across platforms
Send MP3 files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for AIFF.
Embed in documents
Drop MP3 output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.
Optimize size
MP3 often produces smaller files than AIFF for web, email and storage.
Archive & future-proof
Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.
