Quality & Compatibility
The color ceiling is the critical loss point. GIF carries at most 256 colors in its palette, so the TIFF output will be an 8-bit-per-channel RGB or palette-mode file with exactly that color range — no additional color information can be recovered because none exists in the source. TIFF preserves what GIF actually has: the indexed color data is mapped to RGB pixels without re-quantizing, so no further color degradation occurs in the conversion itself. GIF's binary transparency (one palette entry flagged as transparent, no partial opacity) is carried over, but TIFF stores it differently — typically as an associated alpha channel or via a separate transparency mask, not as a palette flag. If the GIF is animated, only the first frame is extracted; TIFF does not natively support animation. No embedded ICC color profile is possible from the GIF side, so the TIFF will lack a profile unless the converter assigns one — meaning color management in downstream print workflows will default to assumptions. Bit depth stays at 8 bits per channel; there is no upsampling to 16-bit because the source data does not support it.
Tips for Best Results
- If your GIF is animated and you need all frames for further editing, convert the GIF to a PNG or TIFF sequence first — one file per frame — rather than a single TIFF, which will silently discard every frame after the first.
- Verify that the output TIFF uses LZW or Deflate compression rather than uncompressed mode: a GIF source is typically small, but an uncompressed TIFF from even a modest GIF can be disproportionately large given that LZW achieves good ratios on the palette-limited pixel data typical in GIFs.
- If the resulting TIFF will enter a print or color-managed workflow, assign an sRGB ICC profile explicitly in your editing application after conversion — the TIFF will arrive without one, and leaving it untagged causes color management tools to make inconsistent assumptions about the intended rendering intent.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both GIF and TIFF are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If TIFF is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded GIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that GIF had already compressed away.
