HOW MKV CAME TO BE.
Matroska (MKV) was started in 2002 by Steve Lhomme and a small team as an open-source, patent-unencumbered alternative to AVI. The name is a play on "matryoshka" — the Russian nesting dolls — because the container stores everything in a hierarchy of nested elements. The file format is defined using EBML (Extensible Binary Meta Language), the binary cousin of XML.
MKV’s rise was quiet but relentless. Anime fansubs adopted it first because it could carry hardcoded plus softcoded subtitles in multiple languages, attached fonts, chapters, and multiple audio tracks — everything an anime release needed.
