Its entire architecture assumes text will reflow to fit different screen sizes and font preferences — there is no fixed page geometry. This design is a strength on a Kindle but becomes a liability the moment you need to share a document with predictable layout: for printing, annotating, or sending to someone without a Kindle app, MOBI gives you nothing guaranteed. Quality & Compatibility
MOBI stores text in a compressed HTML-like structure with embedded images typically in JPEG or GIF format. During conversion the text is typeset into PDF pages, so the output quality depends heavily on the font substitution and margin settings applied at render time. Embedded JPEG images are preserved at their stored resolution, which on older Kindle content can be as low as 96 dpi — insufficient for print but acceptable on screen. MOBI supports a limited subset of CSS, so complex layouts, drop caps, and multi-column text may flatten to single-column prose. Metadata such as title, author, and language tag from the MOBI PalmDB header is typically mapped to PDF XMP and DocInfo fields. There is no alpha-channel or transparency layer in MOBI images to worry about. What is genuinely lost is reflowability itself: the resulting PDF has a fixed font size and line length chosen at conversion, which cannot be changed by the reader afterward the way MOBI content can be resized on a Kindle.
Tips for Best Results
- If your MOBI file contains a table of contents with internal hyperlinks, check whether the PDF output preserves them as clickable bookmarks — this depends on whether the MOBI NCX navigation structure was intact before conversion.
- For print use, set the target page size to A4 or US Letter before converting rather than accepting the default, which is sized to a typical e-reader viewport and will produce narrow columns with large margins on a standard printer.
- MOBI files with DRM (Amazon's Kindle copy protection) cannot be converted by any online tool including this one — only DRM-free MOBI files, such as those downloaded from your own purchases via Amazon's DRM-free delivery or from open-access sources, will process successfully.
