PowerPoint files (.ppt, the binary format used by Office 97–2003) store slides as a compound document with a flat binary structure: each slide contains embedded OLE objects, vector shapes drawn in WMF/EMF coordinates, raster images at their original resolution, and a layout grid measured in EMUs (English Metric Units). None of that survives conversion to JPG in a usable form — JPG is a single-frame raster container with DCT lossy compression tuned for continuous-tone photographs. What the converter actually does is render each slide at a fixed pixel resolution (typically 1280×720 or 1920×1080, mapped from the slide's aspect ratio), flatten all layers into one RGB canvas, and then encode that canvas with a configurable JPEG quality factor. The result is one JPG file per slide. The practical value of this is substantial: sharing slides as images removes the requirement for Office or a compatible viewer, embeds correctly in every CMS and social platform, and eliminates the attack surface of macro-bearing .ppt files when distributing externally.

Quality & Compatibility
JPG uses DCT lossy compression, which means slide content rendered to JPEG always incurs some quality loss — the degree depends on the quality factor applied during encoding. Text with sharp edges and solid-color regions (common in presentation slides) suffer most: DCT introduces blocking artifacts and ringing around high-contrast boundaries that are visible at quality settings below roughly 85. Gradient backgrounds and photographic slide content fare better. The alpha channel is not preserved — any shape or image in the .ppt that used transparency is composited against white (or the slide background color) before encoding, which is permanent and irreversible. Slide notes, animations, hyperlinks, slide transitions, and all embedded fonts are discarded. Color accuracy depends on the renderer: .ppt files may embed or reference colors in sRGB or a custom scheme; the converter renders to sRGB, which is correct for web use. Bit depth is 8-bit per channel (24-bit RGB), which matches standard JPEG — no HDR or wide-gamut data is produced.
Tips for Best Results
- The output resolution determines legibility of text in the JPG — if your slides contain small-font labels or dense tables, ensure the source slide dimensions and render resolution are sufficient before converting; the standard 1280x720 output may make 10pt text blurry at 100% zoom on a high-DPI display.
- Because JPG composites transparency against white, slides that use semi-transparent overlays or shadows over dark backgrounds will look noticeably different in the JPG output than in the original presentation; check the first few slides before bulk-distributing.
- If you need the JPG primarily for web thumbnails or social sharing, the converted file size is already optimized for that use — but if you plan to print the slides at A3 or larger, JPG at standard web resolution will appear soft; for print-quality rasters, a PDF-to-high-res-PNG workflow preserves more fidelity.
