Quality & Compatibility
GIF's color space is its hardest technical constraint: the format is limited to a palette of at most 256 colors per frame (indexed 8-bit color), derived from the full RGB space of the source slide. Slides with gradients, photographic backgrounds, or subtle shadow effects will show visible banding and dithering after conversion. Transparency in PPT (PNG assets dropped onto a transparent layer, for example) is preserved only as a binary matte in GIF — there is no partial alpha, so semi-transparent drop shadows will be flattened against the background color. Font rendering and vector shapes survive well because they are high-contrast and palette-friendly. Animations and slide transitions are represented as discrete frames; complex motion paths may be reduced to a small number of keyframe captures rather than smooth interpolation, depending on the rasterization step. No PPT metadata — speaker notes, slide names, embedded document properties — carries into the GIF container.
Tips for Best Results
- Keep slide backgrounds solid or near-solid: gradient fills and photographic backgrounds consume most of the 256-color palette, leaving too few entries for text and foreground elements and producing visible color banding across the entire frame.
- Set your slide dimensions to a web-friendly pixel size before converting — standard PPT dimensions (33.87 x 19.05 cm at 96 dpi) produce frames around 1280x720 px, which is usable, but reducing to 800x450 or 640x360 cuts file size dramatically while staying readable on screen.
- If your deck uses slide transitions for emphasis rather than content, strip them before converting: a fade or wipe transition adds intermediate frames that inflate file size without communicating additional information when the GIF loops.
