Quality & Compatibility
WMV is a lossy format — VC-1 and WMV3 are both DCT-based codecs similar in principle to MPEG-4 but with their own entropy coding and in-loop filtering. Converting to MOV means re-encoding with a second lossy codec (H.264), which introduces a second compression generation. Perceptually the loss is minor at reasonable bitrates and becomes noticeable only on high-motion content or when the source WMV was already heavily compressed below one megabit per second. WMV does not carry an alpha channel in its standard profiles, so no transparency information is lost. Bit depth is 8-bit 4:2:0 in standard WMV, which H.264 inside MOV preserves identically. WMV metadata fields (title, author, copyright, description) stored in ASF header objects do not map directly to QuickTime atom metadata and are typically discarded during the container remux; embed critical metadata again in the MOV if it is needed downstream.
Tips for Best Results
- If the source WMV was encoded at a very low bitrate — common in screen recordings from Windows XP or Windows 7 era — set the output quality to a constant rate factor rather than a fixed bitrate to avoid starving H.264 on complex frames.
- WMV files from Windows Media Encoder 9 sometimes carry interlaced video flagged incorrectly as progressive; if the resulting MOV shows combing artifacts on fast motion in Final Cut Pro, deinterlace the source before or during conversion.
- The MOV container supports multiple audio tracks, but WMV sources almost always carry a single stereo WMA stream; verify the output audio is AAC stereo before editing in iMovie, as some WMV files carry a 5.1 WMA Pro track that may be downmixed to stereo during re-encode.

Yes. Resolution, frame rate, colour space and bit depth are preserved by default; stream copy is literally bit-identical on these parameters. If you explicitly pick a lower bitrate or a different codec in Advanced, the output is rebuilt to those settings, but the default is always "match the source".
