WMV — Windows Media Video — launched with Windows Media Player 7 in 1999. Like WMA (audio), WMV was Microsoft’s attempt to own the digital media pipeline: codec, container (ASF), player, and DRM layer all from Redmond. WMV 9, released in 2003, was technically competitive with early H.264 and was even submitted to SMPTE as VC-1, used on HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Commercially, WMV ruled Windows desktops in the 2000s, powered Microsoft’s early streaming services (PlaysForSure, Zune Marketplace), and was the baked-in export format of every prosumer camcorder with Windows branding. Then H.264 and MP4 ate its lunch in the 2010s, exactly as with WMA. Windows 11 (2021) deprecated Windows Media Player, and WMV is now legacy.
