TS — MPEG Transport Stream — was ratified in 1995 as part of the MPEG-2 systems standard (ISO/IEC 13818-1). Where MPEG Program Streams were designed for reliable storage media like DVDs, Transport Streams were designed for error-prone broadcast channels: 188-byte packets, continuous sync markers, and built-in error correction. Every satellite, cable, terrestrial, and IPTV digital broadcast on Earth uses Transport Streams as its delivery container.

Standalone .ts files appear in two contexts today: (1) PVR recordings from set-top boxes like TiVo, Dreambox, and most smart TVs, and (2) HLS streaming — Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming segments each video chunk as a small .ts file delivered over HTTPS. YouTube, Twitch, Netflix, and most live-video CDNs use HLS-over-TS internally, meaning TS packets carry more video traffic worldwide in 2026 than any other container.
