What Is the AI Format?
AI (Adobe Illustrator Artwork) is Adobe's native file format for the Illustrator vector graphics application. Files use the .ai extension and contain everything needed to preserve a fully editable Illustrator document: vector paths, text with live type, effects, layers, symbols, brushes, swatches, and non-destructive appearance stacks.
The AI format is proprietary to Adobe, but its internal structure has evolved significantly across versions:
- Pre-CS (Illustrator 8 and earlier): AI files were essentially EPS files with Illustrator-specific DSC comments for editable features. These could be opened partially by any EPS-capable application.
- Illustrator CS–CS5 (versions 11–15): AI files added a PDF compatibility layer. The file is a valid PDF with an embedded AI data stream in a special trailer. Opening in a PDF reader shows the artwork; opening in Illustrator restores full editability.
- Modern AI (CS6 and later, including CC): The PDF compatibility model continues, but the AI-specific data (smart objects, effects, symbols, brushes, non-destructive effects) is richer and increasingly diverges from what PDF alone can represent.
AI File Structure
A modern AI file is a PDF with an embedded raw AI data section. You can verify this by opening any .ai file in a text editor — it begins with %PDF- followed by standard PDF objects, and at the end contains a %%AI section with Illustrator-specific data:
%PDF-1.6
% AI-specific objects mixed with PDF structure
...
%%AI9_PrintingDataBegin
...
%%AI9_PrintingDataEnd
%%AI_CS2Features
...
%%EOF
This dual structure means:
- PDF readers (Preview, Adobe Acrobat) can open .ai files and display the artwork
- Illustrator opens the full document with all editable features intact
However, if you save an AI file with "PDF Compatibility" disabled, the PDF structure is omitted — the file becomes Illustrator-only and cannot be opened by PDF readers.
Illustrator-Specific Features Stored in AI Files
AI format preserves capabilities that no open format can fully represent:
Live Effects
Non-destructive effects applied to objects via the Appearance panel:
- Warp effects — Arc, Bulge, Flag, Wave, and other distortions
- Stylize effects — Drop Shadow, Inner Glow, Outer Glow, Feather
- Distort & Transform — Roughen, Twist, Zig Zag
- Rasterize — vector objects rendered as bitmap at specified resolution
- Photoshop effects — Blur, Sketch, Texture effects via embedded Photoshop engine
Symbols
AI files can store a library of reusable symbol instances. Updating the symbol master updates all instances simultaneously — a powerful workflow for icons, UI elements, and repeated motifs.
Brushes
Custom Art Brushes, Pattern Brushes, Scatter Brushes, Calligraphic Brushes, and Bristle Brushes are stored with the document.
Swatches and Color Groups
Named colors, Pantone/spot colors, gradients, and patterns stored in the Swatches panel are saved with the file.
Variable Data
AI supports a variable data publishing feature (legacy, rarely used) for template-based personalization.
Perspective Grid
Objects placed on a perspective grid retain their grid-aware positioning.
AI Versions and Compatibility
Illustrator uses AI version numbers tied to the application version:
| AI Version | Illustrator Version | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AI 8 | Illustrator 8 | Last pure EPS-based AI |
| AI 9 | Illustrator 9 | PDF compatibility introduced |
| AI 10 | Illustrator 10 | |
| AI 11 | Illustrator CS | |
| AI 12 | Illustrator CS2 | |
| AI 13 | Illustrator CS3 | |
| AI 14 | Illustrator CS4 | |
| AI 15 | Illustrator CS5 | |
| AI 16 | Illustrator CS6 | |
| AI 17-28 | Illustrator CC (annual) | Ongoing |
Backward compatibility: AI files can be saved in older format versions from File → Save As → select format version. This allows sharing with colleagues using older Illustrator versions, but newer features not available in the target version will be flattened or lost.
Forward compatibility: Older versions of Illustrator cannot open files saved in newer formats. If someone with Illustrator CS5 opens a CC file, they'll see a warning and may lose features.
AI vs. Other Vector Formats

When to Use AI vs. When to Export
Keep working in AI format when:
- You need full editability — live type, effects, symbols, artboards
- The artwork will be iterated further in Illustrator
- You're sharing with colleagues who have Illustrator
Export to other formats when:
- Sending to a print shop: Export as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4
- Web use: Export as SVG (File → Export → Export As → SVG)
- Social media / web images: Export as PNG or JPEG
- Other design apps (Figma, Affinity): Export as SVG or PDF
- Legacy print systems: Export as EPS
- 3D software: Export as SVG then convert, or use specific plugins
Opening AI Files Without Illustrator
Because modern AI files are PDF-compatible, you can:
- Rename to .pdf — macOS Preview, Adobe Acrobat, and most PDF readers will open the artwork view
- Open in Inkscape — Inkscape can import AI files (via the PDF layer), but complex live effects and Illustrator-specific features will be flattened or missing
- Open in Affinity Designer — good AI import support; handles paths, gradients, and many effects, but proprietary Illustrator features may simplify
- Online converters — convert AI to SVG, PDF, or PNG online; useful when you just need the artwork as a static image
Important: "Opening" an AI file in non-Illustrator applications means reading its PDF compatibility layer. True round-trip editable AI format support exists only in Adobe Illustrator. Live effects, symbols, and brushes appear as their rendered (flattened) output in other applications.
AI File Size Considerations
AI files tend to be large for several reasons:
- PDF compatibility doubles the data (once for Illustrator's native format, once for the PDF rendering)
- Embedded linked images add their full raster data
- Brushes, symbols, and unused swatches accumulate if not cleaned up
Reducing AI File Size
- Save without PDF compatibility (Document Setup → uncheck "Create PDF Compatible File") — dramatically reduces size if you don't need PDF preview
- File → Document Setup → Clear Unused Brush/Symbol/Swatch libraries — removes accumulated unused assets
- Link images instead of embedding — File → Place → uncheck Embed to keep large rasters external
- Flatten transparency before saving final output files (but never on working files)
AI Format and Adobe Creative Cloud
In the Creative Cloud era, AI files can be saved to Creative Cloud Libraries and shared across Adobe applications. Illustrator assets (symbols, color groups, brushes) stored in CC Libraries appear in Adobe XD, Photoshop, InDesign, and other CC applications — creating a consistent shared asset system across the Adobe ecosystem.
Cloud Documents (the .aic format) are a newer Adobe format for real-time collaborative Illustrator editing in the cloud, distinct from traditional .ai files.
