Most professional imaging pipelines — Adobe Photoshop prior to 2024 plug-ins, many offset prepress RIPs, archival ingest systems, and scientific image analysis tools like ImageJ — do not ship with a native AVIF decoder. TIFF has been natively supported in these contexts since the 1990s. If you receive an AVIF from a web export or a modern smartphone (recent iOS and Android cameras can save AVIF) and need to hand it off to a print supplier, embed it in a GIS layer, or drop it into a legacy publishing workflow, converting to TIFF removes the codec barrier entirely without further quality decisions imposed on you by the output format.

Limitations

  • Encoding is CPU-expensive — an AVIF export can take 10-30× longer than JPEG.
  • Older software (pre-2022) cannot open AVIF without plugins.
  • Email clients still largely ignore it — stick to JPEG for attachments.

TIFF Strengths

  • Lossless by default — no generation loss on successive edits and saves.
  • Supports any bit depth (1 to 32 bits per channel), any color model, any number of channels.

Quality & Compatibility

If the source AVIF was encoded with lossless AV1 compression, the pixel values decoded to TIFF are mathematically identical to the original; no additional generation loss occurs during the TIFF write. If the source was lossy AVIF — which covers the large majority of web-optimized files — the DCT-block artifacts and chroma subsampling damage from the original encode are already baked in; writing to TIFF does not add new loss but also cannot undo existing loss. AVIF supports 8-bit, 10-bit, and 12-bit depth per channel. TIFF can accommodate all three, but the actual bit depth in the output depends on what the decoder exposes: most general-purpose converters decode to 8-bit RGBA by default unless explicitly configured for 16-bit output. Alpha channel and transparency are preserved provided the TIFF is written as RGBA rather than RGB. HDR AVIF content encoded in BT.2020 or PQ/HLG transfer functions will be tone-mapped or clipped to sRGB unless the converter explicitly handles wide-gamut passthrough, which most online tools do not guarantee. EXIF and XMP metadata embedded in the AVIF container transfers cleanly to TIFF's metadata tags.

It depends on the codecs involved. If both AVIF and TIFF are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If TIFF is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded AVIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that AVIF had already compressed away.
