AVIF's HDR capability is both its greatest strength and its most common source of workflow friction. The format stores images in the AV1 Image File Format container with HEVC or AV1 intra-frame compression, supporting up to 12-bit depth per channel and wide-gamut color spaces like BT.2020, PQ, and HLG. When you drop an AVIF into an older tool — an image editing suite from 2021, a canvas API in Firefox before v93, a content management system that processes uploads through GD or ImageMagick builds compiled without libaom — you get nothing. PNG, by contrast, is the universal raster interchange format: every browser since IE 6, every OS image viewer, every design tool handles it without a plugin or compile flag. Converting AVIF to PNG trades compressed storage for unconditional compatibility, which matters every time you hand a file to a system you do not fully control.

AVIF Image

Source format

AVIF is a next-generation image format based on the AV1 video codec. It offers significantly better compression than JPEG and WebP while maintaining excellent visual quality, including HDR and wide color gamut support.

PNG Image

Target format

PNG is a lossless image format that supports transparency. It is ideal for graphics, logos, screenshots, and any image where preserving exact pixel data is important.

AVIF vs PNG — What's the difference?

Why convert AVIF to PNG

The practical triggers for this conversion are narrow but real: a client's CMS strips or rejects AVIF uploads, a macOS or Windows thumbnail pipeline (pre-2022 builds) shows a blank icon, an older Android WebView inside a hybrid app fails to decode the container, or a print workflow expects a lossless raster with an embedded ICC profile that downstream software can read without AV1 decode support. PNG acceptance is effectively universal, which is the only reason to accept the significant increase in file size that comes with it.

HOW TO CONVERT
AVIF → PNG

1

Provide the AVIF

Click or drag to upload. We accept a single AVIF file per job, with an optional queue of additional images for batch mode.

2

Encode to PNG

The conversion decodes the AVIF, resolves the colour space to sRGB and writes the PNG container around the pixel data.

3

Save the PNG

The download is streamed back over HTTPS. If you uploaded multiple files, a ZIP with all PNG outputs is produced instead.

Common Use Cases

Share across platforms

Send PNG files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for AVIF.

Embed in documents

Drop PNG output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.

Optimize size

PNG often produces smaller files than AVIF for web, email and storage.

Archive & future-proof

Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.

AVIF vs PNG — Strengths and limitations

What each format does best, and where it falls short.

AVIF Strengths

  • Best-in-class compression efficiency — 30-50% smaller than JPEG for the same quality.
  • Royalty-free and patent-unencumbered (unlike HEIC).
  • Supports alpha transparency, HDR, wide gamut (BT.2020), and up to 12-bit color.
  • Progressive decoding: a blurry preview appears while the file is still downloading.
  • Supported in all major browsers since late 2022 — no polyfills needed.

Limitations

  • Encoding is CPU-expensive — an AVIF export can take 10-30× longer than JPEG.
  • Older software (pre-2022) cannot open AVIF without plugins.
  • Email clients still largely ignore it — stick to JPEG for attachments.

PNG Strengths

  • Lossless compression — every save preserves the original pixels perfectly.
  • Full 8-bit alpha channel for smooth transparency.
  • Excellent for text, UI screenshots, logos, and line art.
  • Royalty-free and an ISO standard (ISO/IEC 15948).
  • Supports 16-bit color depth for high-fidelity work.

Limitations

  • Much larger than JPEG for photographs (no perceptual compression).
  • No native animation in most software (APNG support is inconsistent).
  • No CMYK support — web and screen only, not print.

Quality & Compatibility

AVIF to PNG is a lossless-output conversion, but the path depends on what the source AVIF contains. If the AVIF was encoded losslessly and at 8-bit depth in sRGB, the decode-to-PNG round-trip is mathematically lossless: every pixel value is preserved. If the source is a 10-bit or 12-bit HDR AVIF in BT.2020 or PQ, the conversion must tone-map or truncate to 8-bit sRGB, which loses highlight and shadow detail the AVIF was holding. Alpha transparency (AVIF supports it natively via an alpha auxiliary image) is decoded and written into PNG's RGBA channel intact. EXIF and XMP metadata embedded in the AVIF container are typically preserved in the output PNG's metadata chunks, though HEIF-specific rotation flags may or may not survive depending on the decoder. ICC profiles embedded in the AVIF are carried over to the PNG iCCP chunk when the decoder honors them.

Frequently Asked Questions

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a next-generation image format based on the AV1 video codec. It offers significantly better compression than JPEG and WebP while supporting HDR, transparency, and wide color gamuts.

It depends on the codecs involved. If both AVIF and PNG are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If PNG is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded AVIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that AVIF had already compressed away.

While AVIF offers superior compression, not all software and platforms support it yet. Converting to PNG ensures your images work everywhere with lossless quality.

Often yes, especially when PNG is lossless. AVIF tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than PNG's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.

Yes, both AVIF and PNG support alpha transparency. Any transparent areas in your AVIF image will be preserved in the PNG output.

KaijuConverter uploads over HTTPS, processes the image in an isolated container and deletes both the source and the output within two hours.
