Quality & Compatibility

DOC is a lossless document format — no pixel data is involved until rendering. The conversion introduces two quality decisions: render resolution (DPI) and JPEG quality factor. At 96 DPI the output matches screen resolution and text edges look soft when zoomed. At 150-300 DPI text is sharp and readable in print. JPEG applies lossy DCT compression: fine text strokes and sharp font edges are exactly the high-contrast, high-frequency content that JPEG handles worst, producing visible ringing artifacts around characters at low quality settings. There is no alpha channel in JPEG, so any transparent object in the DOC — a PNG logo with transparency, for example — will be composited against white before encoding. All document metadata (author, revision history, comments, tracked changes) is discarded. Only the visual appearance of one page per output file is preserved.
