Quality & Compatibility
When the conversion is performed as a remux (stream copy, no re-encoding), video and audio quality are bit-for-bit identical to the source. No codec artifacts are introduced because the compressed data is not decoded and re-encoded. H.264 or H.265 video, AAC or AC-3 audio, and any attached data streams pass through untouched. What can be lost: QuickTime-specific metadata atoms such as Apple chapter markers may not translate to MKV chapter format depending on the tool used; location GPS metadata embedded in iPhone MOV files is stored in QuickTime udta atoms and is typically discarded in the remux. Color space signaling (BT.709, BT.2020 for HDR MOV from iPhone) is preserved at the codec level inside the HEVC/H.264 bitstream itself, so HDR tone mapping data survives. ProRes MOV files remux cleanly into MKV since MKV supports ProRes as a video codec, though player support for ProRes-in-MKV is narrower than H.264-in-MKV on non-Apple hardware.
Tips for Best Results
- If your MOV source contains HDR content shot on iPhone (Dolby Vision profile 8.4 or HDR10), verify that the player or media server you are targeting reads the HDR metadata from the MKV — the data survives the remux but some players require explicit HDR passthrough enabled in their settings.
- Subtitles embedded as TX3G tracks in MOV (common in Final Cut Pro exports) must be extracted and converted to SRT or ASS before remuxing; otherwise they are silently dropped into the MKV with no corresponding readable track.
- ProRes-in-MKV plays correctly in VLC and mpv but will not hardware-accelerate on most Windows or Linux GPUs — if playback smoothness on non-Apple hardware is the goal, consider whether a transcode to H.264-in-MKV is more appropriate than a pure remux.

When the source uses a codec the target does not support, we transcode at a matching bitrate to keep the visual quality close to the original.
With stream copy, expect the job to finish in seconds to tens of seconds regardless of video length — the work is mostly rewriting the container. Transcoding is slower (roughly real-time: a ten-minute clip takes about ten minutes) because every frame must be decoded and re-encoded. The progress bar shows which mode applies.
Yes. Resolution, frame rate, colour space and bit depth are preserved by default; stream copy is literally bit-identical on these parameters. If you explicitly pick a lower bitrate or a different codec in Advanced, the output is rebuilt to those settings, but the default is always "match the source".
