When someone extracts a JPG from a MOV file, they are not converting video to image in any compressed-stream sense — they are pulling a single frame (or a sequence of frames) out of a temporal container and encoding each one as a standalone JFIF/Exif JPEG file. Why convert MOV to JPG

Quality & Compatibility
The MOV source video's H.264 or HEVC encoding already discards color information via 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, so the extracted frame begins with a luminance-color ratio of 1:0.25:0.25 relative to a true RGB capture. JPEG then applies its own DCT quantization on top of that, introducing blocking artifacts at lower quality settings, particularly in gradients and fine detail. Bit depth is fixed at 8 bits per channel in standard JPEG — any 10-bit or log-encoded footage (such as Apple Log from iPhone 15 Pro) will be tone-mapped and clipped to 8-bit sRGB during extraction, losing HDR headroom entirely. Alpha channel transparency is not supported in JPEG; if the MOV track somehow carried transparency data, it is dropped. Exif metadata (timestamp, GPS if present in the MOV) may be partially preserved depending on the extraction tool. Color profile embedding (sRGB, Display P3) is possible in JPEG via ICC profile, but is tool-dependent and not guaranteed.
Tips for Best Results
- Choose the source frame carefully before converting: MOV video encoded at 30 fps gives you 30 distinct frames per second to select from, and motion blur within a frame is permanent — it cannot be removed post-extraction, so pause on a moment where the subject is stationary for the sharpest result.
- If your MOV was shot in a wide color space such as Display P3 (common on iPhones since iPhone 7), the extracted JPEG should embed an sRGB or P3 ICC profile to avoid color shift when the image is displayed on standard monitors — check your output file's color profile in image metadata before publishing.
- Set JPEG quality at 85–92 for the best balance: below 80, DCT blocking becomes visible in smooth areas like sky or skin; above 95, file size grows sharply with diminishing perceptual returns, since the source frame already carries H.264 compression artifacts that higher JPEG quality cannot recover.
