The problem is that modern browsers, phones, and editing apps have largely dropped native MPEG-2 decoding — iOS dropped hardware MPEG-2 support years ago, and Chrome and Firefox never shipped it for MPEG-2 PS/TS streams. Converting to MP4 repackages the video (usually re-encoding it to H.264 inside an MPEG-4 Part 14 container) and produces a file that plays natively on every major platform without plugins. The practical trigger: you have an old DVD backup, a clip from a MiniDV camcorder workflow, or a broadcast recording, and it simply will not play or upload anywhere without conversion.

Quality & Compatibility
MPG to MP4 is a lossy-to-lossy transcode, meaning quality cannot exceed what the source already contains, and re-encoding introduces a second generation of compression artifacts. MPEG-2 video on a DVD is typically encoded at 4–8 Mbps with a maximum resolution of 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL). When re-encoded to H.264, the encoder must decode the MPEG-2 DCT blocks and re-compress them — any existing blocking or ringing is baked in before the new codec touches the frame. MPEG-2 does not carry an alpha channel, so transparency is not a concern. Color space is typically BT.601 YCbCr 4:2:0, and a correct encoder preserves that color space tag in the MP4 container. MPEG-2 metadata (aspect ratio flags, field dominance for interlaced content) should be read and honored during conversion; interlaced source material ideally receives a deinterlace pass before encoding, though that step adds processing time. Audio: MPEG-1 Layer II tracks transfer cleanly to AAC inside MP4 with minimal perceptible loss at 128 kbps or above.
Tips for Best Results
- If your source MPG is from a DVD and contains interlaced video (common for PAL and NTSC footage), the re-encoded MP4 may show combing artifacts on motion unless the converter applies deinterlacing before encoding — check the output on a still of fast movement before discarding the original.
- MPEG-2 Program Stream files (.mpg, .mpeg) can contain multiple audio tracks — for example a bilingual DVD. Verify which audio track is selected for the output before converting, as converters typically default to the first track.
- Keep the original MPG file until you confirm the MP4 plays correctly from start to finish. Because this is a lossy re-encode, there is no lossless round-trip back to the original MPEG-2 bitstream if you need to re-export later at a different quality level.
