HOW TO CONVERT 3GP → WAV
Start the job
Upload your 3GP; the pipeline auto-detects the audio codec and the best extraction strategy.
Demux to WAV
FFmpeg pulls the audio track out of the 3GP container and writes a clean WAV.
Save the result
Click download. The video track never leaves our processing container unmodified — we only returned the audio you asked for.
Here is the short version — 3GP is the mobile video container standardised by 3GPP for early smartphones. Hence the need for WAV. Going from 3GP to WAV means pulling the audio track out of a video container and muxing it into a pure audio format. The result is a dramatically smaller file (typically 10-20 MB per hour instead of hundreds) and one that every music app, car stereo and podcast client can read natively. Context: 3GP is the mobile video container standardised by 3GPP for early smartphones. WAV is Microsoft's uncompressed PCM container — the studio master format on Windows.
Why convert 3GP to WAV
WAV is the lingua franca of audio: car stereos, Bluetooth speakers, voice assistants and music apps all expect it. A 3GP cannot be uploaded to most of those ecosystems, but the WAV you extract today will play anywhere tomorrow.

3GP vs WAV — Strengths and limitations
What each format does best, and where it falls short.
3GP Strengths
- Extremely low bitrate and file size — great for 2G/3G networks.
- Universal playback in feature phones and early smartphones.
- Based on MP4 — easy to convert and handle with modern tools.
- Mandatory codec in every 3G device since 2001.
Limitations
- Tiny resolutions — rarely above 320×240 in practice.
- H.263 video is far behind H.264 in compression efficiency.
- Metadata support is minimal.
WAV Strengths
- Bit-perfect, uncompressed audio — the professional studio standard.
- Universally supported for playback, editing, and analysis.
- No re-encoding penalty — edit and save repeatedly with zero quality loss.
- Simple internal structure — easy to parse programmatically.
- Supports up to 32-bit float and 384 kHz sample rates.
Limitations
- Enormous file sizes — 10 MB per minute for CD-quality stereo.
- 4 GB size limit for standard WAV (RF64/W64 variants extend it but break compatibility).
- No native support for cover art or rich metadata.
Quality & Compatibility
Metadata such as track title, artist and chapter markers survive when the 3GP carries them in a form the WAV supports. If the source 3GP lacks tagging, the WAV will be untagged — that is not a conversion bug, it is simply the source data.
Tips for Best Results
- For spoken-word content (podcasts, lectures), 64-96 kbps is indistinguishable from higher rates and saves storage dramatically.
- For music, do not drop the WAV bitrate below the audio bitrate of the source 3GP, otherwise you introduce a second lossy stage.
- Record your extraction settings once and reuse them — consistent bitrate and sample rate across an archive makes downstream tooling happier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The free tier accepts files up to 25 MB without registration, email capture or watermarks; paid plans go up to 2 GB. Paid plans raise the size cap, enable batch conversions and provide a REST API for automation, but nothing on the free tier is quality-limited — the output is exactly the same as on any paid plan.
Only if the audio codec inside 3GP is not directly writable into the WAV container. When codecs match we stream-copy, producing a bit-exact WAV. When they differ, we re-encode at a high-quality default, so the perceptual loss is tiny for anything other than lossless-to-lossless mismatches.
Uploads run over HTTPS, files are processed in isolated containers, and both the source 3GP and the WAV output are auto-deleted within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and KaijuConverter does not use uploads for AI training. The paid plan adds a signable data-processing agreement for regulated workflows.
No. The full 3GP lands in our processing container, we demux the audio locally and then the container is destroyed. The video bytes never leave KaijuConverter infrastructure and auto-delete within two hours along with the original file.
Most files finish in well under a minute. Small images and documents are typically ready in a few seconds; large video or audio files scale roughly with duration. Upload speed from your network is usually the dominant factor, not server time.
Yes. The Advanced options let you set start and end times in HH:MM:SS, so you can extract a single chapter, a specific quote or a clean sample instead of the full duration of the 3GP.
3GPP Video
Source format3GP is a multimedia container designed for 3G mobile phones. It stores video and audio at low bitrates optimized for limited bandwidth. Many early mobile phone recordings use this format.
WAV Audio
Target formatWAV is an uncompressed audio format that preserves full audio fidelity. Files are large but provide lossless, CD-quality sound. It is the standard working format in audio production and editing.
Common Use Cases
Share across platforms
Send WAV files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for 3GP.
Embed in documents
Drop WAV output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.
Optimize size
WAV often produces smaller files than 3GP for web, email and storage.
Archive & future-proof
Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.
